In 1999, the United
States Mint launched the 50 State Quarters’ Program , with state reverse
quarters to be issued from 1999 to 2008. Each year , a series of five quarters is produced with
distinctive reverse symbolic of the states in the order they joined the Union . The reverse motifs depict some aspect of the
history, tradition , or nature of each state.
To accommodate the
creative designs intended for the reverse of the state quarters, the Mint
modified the John Flanagan portrait of Washington
, and the inscription UNITED
STATES OF AMERICA and QUARTER DOLLR were
moved from the reverse to the obverse above and below the portrait ,
respectively . The year of issue was moved from the obverse to the reverse. LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST were also relocated. The
mint marks appears on the obverse near the bow of Washington ’s periwig.

A new coin program
was approved at the end of 2007: it calls for the U.S. Mint to produce, in a
sequence, six unique quarters in 2009. They commemorate the District
of Columbia and the five U.S. Territories: the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico ,
Guam , American Samoa ,
the U.S. Virgin islands and the Commonwealth of the Northern
Mariana islands . These quarters feature George Washington’s
Portrait on the Obverse. The revere of each coin honors the history , geography
or traditions of the place it symbolizes.
